THE GREENFIELD CHILDREN’S HOME STORY
We all have a story. Some of our stories include times of happiness and contentment, free from struggle and strife. However, the reality is there are stories that include heartbreak. Sadly the children we care for at the Greenfield Children’s Home on the Honduran Island of Roatan have stories of heartbreak and separation that they were never meant to experience.
Where is God when your dad commits suicide? Where is the food when the single mother decides she loves crack cocaine more than her child? From what kind of squalor did the emaciated, scabies-ridden baby come? Because Honduras does not have the resources to provide for social workers or foster care, there is no “social safety net” to catch the less fortunate.
Children in the midst of these terrible, abusive situations need to be removed from what they have known as “home,” usually by the police. They wait for the courts to decide their fate, alone and afraid. Sandy Bay Lighthouse Ministries built the Greenfield Children’s Home to give these children a loving alternative to being institutionalized on Honduras mainland. Local authorities now contact our ministry to place these precious children in an environment that meets their emotional, physical, and educational needs.
When a child is placed at our home we do not know how long he or she will be with us. For some it is a temporary stay as the authorities investigate the reason the child was removed from his or her parents. For many this will be their home until they are prepared to join the community as a young adult. Whatever the length of stay, the child will experience the love of God through our dedicated staff. The children learn that God has a plan for their life, and will make provision for them to prosper. Instead of pain and poverty, with God’s help through you, we can offer a destiny of promise and potential.
